REPORT
By Keith Masters

Ashford United progressed to the third round of the Velocity Cup with a victory over Hythe Town at The Homelands on Tuesday 7th November.
The scores were level at the end of normal time with the hosts winning an exciting penalty shoot out by 7 goals to 6.

Ashford began the game in fine form.
After just seven minutes Kymani Thomas, after a fine run, saw his shot just pass the outside of the post.
Two minutes later a fine effort from Noah Carney cannoned off the bar and back into play.
Hythe countered and narrowly missed scoring when Kai Garande shot just wide.

The visitors took the lead in the 23rd minute. A shot from Charles Noyelle beat the diving Jacob Russell and crashed against the right hand post. The ball rebounded into play and struck the back of Jacob Russell’s head and rolled into the goal.

Four minutes later Ashford United was level with a ‘peach’ of a goal.
An attack by Hythe Town was broken up by the Ashford defence. The ball was passed to Noah Carney midway in the Ashford half of the field. Noah’s great run took him to the opposition penalty area where his inch perfect pass found Lanre Azeez who made no mistake.

Ashford United dominated much of the second half efforts but Ben Gorham, Kymani Thomas, Lanre Azeez, Rhyle Ovenden and Vance Bola all failed to find the goal.
Hythe came into the game strongly for the last ten minutes of normal time but the home defence remained strong.

Level at the end of normal time the game was decided by kicks from the penalty mark. Ashford won the ‘shoot out’ by 7 goals to 6 the winning penalty being calmly put away by Stanley Oldfield.
