Ashford United is pleased to confirm the signing of Gus Barnes this morning, who joins from Whitstable Town.
The 18-year old forward is a former product of our youth, playing at U16 level for the club before suffering a broken leg.
Having forced his way into the Whitstable side at the back end of last season aged 17, Barnes made a positive impact for the Oystermen which included a scintillating performance against Ashford at Belmont Rd back in February.
Barnes has impressed in pre-season training and highlighted his talent in his first 45-minutes on Saturday, forcing an own goal and being heavily involved in the build-up to another.
He becomes the club’s seventh summer signing and when speaking to the club website, Tommy Warrilow was full of praise for the young forward.
“I am delighted to bring Gus [Barnes] on board heading into the new season. This boy has got unbelievable talent that I am hoping to nurture.” Warrilow said.
“His ability is second to none, he’s got everything going for him, and for those who might’ve seen him play on the weekend would’ve also seen that.
“He’s here with us now and hopefully we’ll be able to push this boy on properly with us because I think he’s got every attribute needed to push on into the full-time game.
“With a proper pre-season under his belt, he’ll just keep learning and I am looking forward to seeing him showcase that full potential on the pitch.
“It’s a great addition, he knows he has to fight for his place like everybody else but what an exciting prospect to have at the club.” He finished.
