Barry and Dan come on board for our Under 23s Development side.

We are delighted to confirm that Barry Fuller has agreed to take over as the Ashford United Under 23s Development side manager, bringing in current Kennington FC manager Dan Scorer as his assistant manager as well as coach Tim McRae.

Director Don Crosbie:

I would like to thank Shaun Holland and Kevin Brown for their interest in starting up the Under 23s Development squad and understand their difficulties coming from afar which was always going to prove tough. It is now under the control of our great local professional Barry Fuller together with Manager of Kennington (and of course ex Ashford United player) Dan Scorer. They are two excellent role models ably assisted by Kyle Galea who heads up our Under 18s and youth strategy. The club is here for all Ashford budding footballers whether from Kennington, Ashford United or anywhere in the Ashford district. Our development should hinge on Ashford boys who are our future and will wear the badge with pride. We have a great crop of young stars coming through and with the management we have put in place they will all have a great opportunity to excel.

Isthmian Under 18s manager Kyle Galea:

Our aim as a club is to progress Ashford boys throughout the club. With a new system coming into place this year where if players are good enough they will be pushed up a year to gain experience at a higher level testing their abilities.

Having managed the Under 15s last year and staying with them this year too, I will have a greater understanding on who is ready to make that massive step up to Isthmian football. I feel confident that a lot of players are going to progress through the ranks as we (managers and chairmen) are going to be working closer than ever.

This is a great opportunity for all the players involved to be part of this new integration system which I stated above. On Tuesday I had one Under 16s player in my squad who started the game. Throughout the season I won’t be afraid to use the U16s as they are a fantastic team, I am in constant contact with Martyn Halls their manager and this is what makes this season an exciting one. When a few of my Under 18s are called up to the 23s, the 16s will come up replacing them, and this should be the situation across the whole youth.

Overall I am excited to start the season and work again with Barry Fuller, as he is a great asset to have within the clubs’ structure.

Under 23s Assistant Manager Dan Scorer:

We’re both delighted to have been approached about the vacant Under 23s job and we’re really looking forward to seeing how the boys progress throughout the season. There is some fantastic young talent in Ashford and it needs to be recognised. We have a great opportunity of bridging the gap between the Under 23s and the 1st team, which is one of the main reasons I’m involved.

A lot of these lads aren’t going to be ready for that step up straight away and so if I can provide them with a platform at Kennington as well, it will be a win win situation for everyone. Barry and Tim have worked with a lot of these lads before during their time with the Under 18s last season so they’ll have an idea of what to expect. Tuesday will be our first opportunity to see the boys back together and already there is a real buzz about the squad. Players are likely to come and go in the next few weeks but we’ll be looking to settle the squad over the next month and have a side that is capable of competing and stepping up when needed.

Our Under 23s Development side play their first competitive game this Tuesday 3rd September 2019 when they travel away to take on Phoenix Sports Under 23s in the Bluefin Sports Insurance Development League, 7.45pm kick off.
