BECKENHAM TOWN 0 ASHFORD UNITED 1
By Keith Masters
Ashford United returned to winning ways with a solid performance at Beckenham on Saturday.
The Nuts & Bolts were without captain Bradley Simms and Jonah Tolulope but welcomed back Tariq Ossai returning after a long injury.
The game began as a ‘cat and mouse’ affair, but both teams appeared to cancel each other out. The first real action of the first half was in the 23rd minute when Tariq Ossai was adjudged to have fouled Brad Ryan.
Anthony Adesite’s spot kick cannoned off the post and was cleared.
Ashford gradually came into the game, and a cross shot from Tom Carlse was well saved by Beckenham’s goalkeeper Nick Blue.
Good combination work between Ben Gorham, Harvey Brand and Anthony Edgar brought another fine save from Blue.
Ashford United took the lead in stoppage time at the end of the first half. Harvey Brand was fouled in the penalty area. Danny Parish made no mistake from the penalty spot.
Half time Beckenham 0 Ashford United 1
The second half was a credit to the Ashford defence. Beckenham pressured hard for an equaliser but the defence remained firm and controlled and allowed the hosts no real chance of a goal.
Ashford could have doubled their lead in the closing stages when Danny Parish beat the keeper but saw his excellent effort saved by the goalpost.
A satisfying day for the Nuts and Bolts and provides encouragement for the future.
