Ashford United returned to winning ways at The Homelands on Tuesday with a fine win over Westfield in the league Velocity Cup.
A win which places the Nuts and Bolts in the competition quarter final.
The game was something of a landmark for two of the Ashford players.
Club captain Bradley Simms was playing his 100th game for the club and goalkeeper Chris Lewington was making his ‘home’ debut.
Ashford had the better of the early exchanges. Danny Parish was unlucky on two occasions and for the early part of the game the hosts recent bad luck in front of goal appeared to be the case again.
This was exacerbated in the 37th minute when a rare attack by the visitors enabled Jason Breckon to beat Chris Lewington with a back header for Westfield to take the lead very much against the run of play.
The lead was short-lived. Going one down appeared to spur the hosts into a more determined attitude and four minutes later, Danny Parish equalised for Ashford United.
Halftime 1-1
Ashford continued their domination at the beginning of the second half and fifteen minutes after the restart, some great work by Anthony Edgar on the right wing produced an inch perfect centre from which Harvey Brand put Ashford ahead.
Two minutes later Westfield was level when Manolis Gogonas was put through and scored.
Undaunted Ashford United continued to pressurise the Westfield defence and further goals by Rhyle Ovenden (77th minute) and Ben Gorham (stoppage time) sealed a well deserved victory.
